With ever increasing demands on our time, it isn’t always easy to learn more about the issues that are not only important to us personally, but that are critical to New Hampshire’s future as well. With that in mind, NHSFFP has created three short videos to help explain some of the most vital aspects of school funding in New Hampshire. Our first short video reviews and explains the variety of rulings by the New Hampshire Supreme Court over the past several decades that have helped to define the state’s responsibilities in educating our children.
Our second short video focuses on property taxes. While many are familiar with the role that property taxes play in financing public services here in the Granite State, few fully appreciate the extent to which New Hampshire depends upon local property taxes to fulfill what is fundamentally a state responsibility: educating our children. This video examines New Hampshire’s reliance on property taxes for education and describes the enormous inequities that it forces homeowners in different parts of the state to bear.
Despite multiple rulings by the New Hampshire Supreme Court, the resources that the State of New Hampshire directs to local school districts still fall well short of meeting the costs districts incur in educating the children in their communities. Our third and final short video looks at the tremendous gap between state aid and local education costs and discusses some of the implications of those shortfalls.
