$30 Million and a Question of Priorities at the State House Today

A Clear Choice on Taxes and Priorities Before Lawmakers Today

Today, the House and Senate are hearing two bills that reflect a clear choice about New Hampshire’s priorities.

One proposal, HB 155, would reduce state revenue by $26 million on a business tax cut that overwhelmingly benefits the state’s largest corporations. Under the bill, about 300 major companies would receive savings of more than $2,500 per month, while the average small business would see less than $50.

At the same time, lawmakers are considering HB 1787, which would invest a similar amount to expand access to the state’s Low- and Moderate-Income Property Tax Relief Program. Currently, that program reaches relatively few households and provides modest relief, averaging under $300 per claim each year. HB 1787 modernizes outdated income limits and eligibility rules so more working families, seniors, and people on fixed incomes can get meaningful help with rising property taxes.

“These hearings are about more than numbers on a spreadsheet – they’re about values,” said Zack Sheehan, Executive Director at the New Hampshire School Funding Fairness Project. “Lawmakers can use this money to deliver another round of large tax breaks to a small number of corporations, or they can provide real, targeted relief to the people who are feeling property taxes most acutely. We believe the choice is clear.”
